Considerations, Concerns and Suggestions for Success

Small businesses that create websites and other internet based digital products are at a disadvantage to larger firms for several reasons.  Because they are small (for the purposes of this article, small means less than 50 employees), they lack the resources of the bigger firms.  This means that the projects they take on must be smaller in scope and usually timeframe. A paradox forms because of this relationship. Small businesses take on small projects because they lack the resources for big projects, yet to be competitive, they must take many small projects on at once, many of which will inevitably have delays and changes to timeframes, and lead to the firm lacking resources anyway when deadlines coincide.

A Cufón Small Caps Hack

I love the cufón font replacement technique. It allows developers to use custom fonts dynamically in their websites.  It’s incredibly easy to use compared to earlier options like siFR.  The@font-face CSS3 property (and Google Font Directory!) are of course an even better solution, but the limited browser support means we’ll have to wait awhile before this approach has dominance. For now, Cufón is easy enough and works in just about every browser – even IE6!

Using the WordPress 3.0 Menus Feature Part 2 – Styling and Animating

Welcome back! Since my first post, where I demonstrated the simple yet powerful WordPress 3.0 Menu Management functionality, WordPress 3.0 RC1 has been released! With this great new tool, WordPress has become an even more robust option for content management. Now non-technical users can easily manage the navigation (including drop-down menus) of their site through a WYSIWYG environment.

In this second post, I’m going to explore the code generated by this functionality, and give a simple demonstration of how to style and animate the generated menus using  CSS and jQuery. You can then use these skills to develop your own WordPress 3.0 theme and its menus.
